Year 10
Heretaunga College proudly supports a contextualised curriculum approach to learning for our year 10 students. At year 10 our ākonga continue their studies to cover all the necessary NZC (New Zealand Curriculum) requirements that prepare them for their NCEA journey in the senior school. By the end of their second year of high school, ākonga will have experience a wide variety of curriculum offerings:
All students study:
English
Social Studies
Mathematics
Science
Physical Education and Health
Technology (digital, design, food, soft and hard materials)
Visual Arts
Performing Arts (music and drama)
Languages (Te Reo Māori, German, Japanese and NZ Sign Language)
Supported Learning:
Some students will benefit from our Steps classes which provide supported learning opportunities for students with identified learning needs.
Common Assessment Activity (CAA): Literacy and Numeracy
From 2023, all year 10 ākonga will have two opportunities in the year to participate in three CAA sessions. The three sessions will cover Literacy Reading, Literacy Writing and Numeracy skills for NCEA level 1 assessment. Students will have 2 hours (for each session) to complete a digital, online session that tests their skills in each section. By the time our students finish their schooling at HC, they will need to have passed each of the literacy and numeracy assessments. The CAA sessions give our year 10 ākonga a ‘head start’ in gaining the 20 credits on offer from the CAA sessions. If students are successful in any, or all of the sessions, they will qualify for their NCEA level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications. If they require more opportunities to be successful, these will be offered in years 11, 12 and 13, or as they progress each year through school.
